Staedtler and Lyra automatic pencil leads possess outstanding product characteristics. Made up of over 90% carefully-selected, natural raw materials and manufactured in a unique, ecological production process -- no PVC and no softening agents -- these autotomatic pencil leads offer soft, smooth gliding while writing. Jet black lines are produced because of the high graphite content. The leads are extremely break resistant due to their high flexibility (they bend, rather than break). Lyra fineline leads are commonly not available in the United States, because in late 2006 Lyra discontinued making them directly available to USA stores. But we import them as regularly as possible, because this is a lead worth trying!

Pentel automatic pencil leads are formulated with polymer resin bonded to carbon and graphite particles. They write smoothly, produce dense black lines that resist smearing and fading. Pentel continues to expand its pencil leads offerings in the USA.

Which lead is the "best" for you to purchase? We don't know and anecdotal evidence suggests the differences are subtle. Yet, our experience is that users have distinct preferences for one manufacturer over another. There must be reasons for that!
